Lidia Rodriguez
Baritone Saxophonist, Multi Woodwind-Instrumentalist, and Educator Lidia Rodriguez is an up-and-coming artist prominent in the California Bay Area, now working and living in Los Angeles.
She is quickly making a name and creating spaces for the Baritone Saxophone. An instrument rarely seen out and about let alone played by a petite, queer, brown woman.
The Stockton born musician grew up playing an extremely diverse spectrum of genres as a child that inspired her to continue throughout her musical journey. As most saxophonists take the jazz route, Lidia took that plus a few more. Jazz, Classical, Funk, Latin, Pop, Hip-Hop, Psychedelic, Lo-fi, Afro-Beat, Chicano pop, and more. She then left her hometown to expand to the Bay Area where she became a pillar of their thriving music community, and is now based in Los Angeles continuing her musical purposes.
She plays Baritone Sax as a main member of the Band La Misa Negra, known for their unique blend of heavyweight cumbia and high-energy, Afro-Latin music.
Her ability to flow gracefully between a wide range of genres is what has made her a solid part of multiple music communities from Canada to the entire Bay Area and even from LA to Costa Rica.
Lidia is also the ultimate sideman and her history proves it. She has even been known to do voice over work for the Bay Area’s NBA team the Golden State Warriors ;). Versatile is definitely an understatement.
Whether she’s playing in a Pep Band for the Golden State Warriors, opening up for Macy Gray, part of an 18 piece Grammy Award winning Latin band Pacific Mambo Orchestra, touring with artists like Madame Gandhi and SF native La Doña. Or taking on big stages such as the Bottlerock Festival, Envision Festival in Costa Rica, and the Edmonton Folk Music Festival in Canada. Ms. Rodriguez shines bright and elevates any project she is a part of. Not only with her musical skill but with her infectious and effervescent energy.
Lidia is stunning on stage and in the studio with a growing collection of session work under her belt as well. Living up to her multifaceted name she does her session work on Baritone Sax, Tenor Sax, and Flute.
In 2022 she was chosen as a featured artist for a 4 page spread in Content Magazine’s 10 Year Anniversary edition, issue 14.2. A 2023 San Jose Jazz Aid Fund Grant Award winner. Interviewed by the KQED Rightnowish Podcast for their segment, Liner Notes: highlighting Jazz Musicians in the Bay Area. Featured as an artist for a live interview and solo performance for the live broadcast of Liner Notes Live: A Rightnowish Jazz Production.
Has performed in Notable venues such as Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center, The Fillmore, Yoshi’s Oakland, The Great American Music Hall and The Roosevelt Theater.
